About This Old Horse:

Founded in 2012, This Old Horse is a private 501(c) 3 nonprofit whose mission is to provide sanctuary to retired, rescued, or recovering horses while they continue to serve as ambassadors to the positive effect of "horse power" in the lives of people.​

 

How do I get to the run site?​

The 5k will begin and end at Wishbone Ranch, home of This Old Horse. We are located at:​

​     19025 Coates Blvd.

     Hastings, MN 55033

Please use this address to determine your route. While our address is in Hastings, we are not located in the city itself.

From Highway 52 (not Highway 55), turn West onto 190th Street. From there, follow event signs.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I can't participate but want to help. What can I do?

​There are lots of opportunities to help! You can volunteer, become a partner or post a flier about the event at your favorite local businesses. You can also sign up as a virtual runner or a couch potato participant. We welcome all supporters to join in the festivities, including a spectacular silent auction and open house extravaganza.

 

What is a virtual runner?

If you're not located near us or are otherwise unable to participate on race day, register for a virtual race! This feature allows you to compete against yourself—and other members—and still be a proud participant of the Run For The Roses. Simply map out your own route, complete your race, and share your results on our Facebook page. Registered virtual runners will receive a t-shirt (guaranteed by the event date if you sign up by April 20).

 

What is a couch potato participant?

Not a runner but still want to join in the fun? Sign up as a couch potato participant to support the cause without having to put in the leg work (literally). Registered couch potato participants will receive a t-shirt (guaranteed by the event date if you register

by April 20).

 

What is the Four Furlong Stick Horse Derby?

Kids 12 and under can run with in this fun half-mile run. Note that this run is separate from the Run For The Roses and starts at 9:30 a.m.

 

My company wants to support the run. How do we get signed up?

We welcome support of any kind and all sizes for this charitable event. Visit the Sponsor page for more information and to sign up.

 

Do participants receive anything?

Participants will receive a t-shirt, a swag bag, and of course the satisfaction of knowing they are supporting a worthy cause. Please note that those registering the day of are not guaranteed a shirt in their size.

Is there an age requirement to participate in the run?

Supporters of all ages are welcome to participate! ​Those under age 18 must have consent from a parent or guardian to participate. Download the consent form. Children under age 5 do not need to be registered separately from an accompanying adult. All children must be supervised by an adult at all times during the run and post-run festivities.

 

How do I register for a team?

Teams can be formed by groups of four people or more. When registering, simply select the team member option and give the team name. All team members must register and give the same team name in order to be recognized as a team and to receive the discount. Note that individual registrations cannot be changed to team member registrations. If fewer than four people are registered for a given team by the event date, those individuals will be required to pay the difference to cover an individual entry fee.

 

Can I register my entire team, family, or group?
Yes, you can register and pay for up to 4 people in addition to yourself. Simply add their information on your registration form and pay their run fee (all run fees must be paid at the time of registration). Individuals who do not register themselves will be required to sign a liability form the day of the event; minors who do not register for themselves will need to have a parent or guardian sign a consent form.  If you have a bigger group, contact us at info@thisoldhorse.org and we can help with larger group.

 

Can someone join our team at a later date?

Yes, additional team members can join at any time. They must register and may be required to pay a higher entry fee as prices go up as the event date nears. Note that individual registrations cannot be changed to team member registrations.

​I am registered on a team. Do we all need to check in together?

No. Team members need to check in individually the day of the run.

Are entry fees refundable or transferable?

Registration fees are nonrefundable but can be transferred. Contact us to transfer your entry fee.

 

If I miss the event, can I still get my t-shirt?

Yes. There will be scheduled opportunities after the event when registered participants can pick up their t-shirts.

 

I left the event before the silent auction closed. How do I know if I won and when can I pick up my item(s)?

All winning bidders who are not present when the silent auction closes will be notified. There will be scheduled opportunities after the event when winning bidders can pick up their items.

 

Where should I park?

​Upon your arrival at the run site, there will be signs and volunteers to direct you to parking. We highly encourage carpooling.

 

What time should I arrive?

Please arrive with ample time to park, check in, and prepare for the run, which will start promptly at 10 a.m.

What is the weather policy?

We wish we could predict the weather! The 5k will take place rain or shine, barring any extreme weather conditions that would put the safety of participants at risk.

 

What is the run route like?

The route begins and ends at Wishbone Ranch in Hastings, Minn., home of This Old Horse. It is on gravel roads featuring some inclines.

 

Is the run timed?

No, but there will be a race clock for participants' reference.

Can I walk?

Of course!

Will the horses be participating in the run? Can I ride or work with the horses?

​No, the horses will not partake in the run (we'll leave that to the professionals at the Derby!). So that we are able to ensure the safety and comfort of both our horses and participants/supporters, there will not be opportunities to ride or otherwise work with the horses. Should there be a horse emergency, This Old Horse staff will address the issue. Only authorized personnel are allowed to go into horse areas, such as paddocks and stalls.

Are dogs, strollers, and headphones allowed?

Yes. Dogs must be leashed and under control at all times, including during post-run festivities.

Can I ride my bike?

No. For safety reasons, bikes, trikes, scooters, skateboards, skates, and the like are not allowed on the run route.

Can I ride my horse?

No. For safety reasons, the run is limited to humans (and their well-behaved, leashed canine companions).

Will there be medical/first aid available?

Yes. In the event of an emergency, volunteers will assist and contact on-site emergency personnel.​

What if I am unable to finish the run?
No problem. Volunteers along the run route will assist you.

Will clothing and/or bag check be available?

​No. Please plan accordingly and keep personal belongings with you or secured in your vehicle.

Will there be water stops?

Yes.

Will there be access to a bathroom?

Yes.
